Oak Brook Fears Village Tax If Multi-Unit Housing Proposal Passes

Oak Brook residents and village trustees worry that a proposed multi-unit development would lead to a village tax.

OAK BROOK, IL — A recent village board meeting in Oak Brook lasted over two hours as residents and trustees voiced concerns about a proposed multi-unit housing development in the heart of the bustling business district. The long-planned mixed-use condo development has some residents worried that it might result in a village property tax, Chicago Tribune reports.

Some residents said at the meeting that they were loath to change the general vibe of the village by adding a condo structure. Others support the proposed development as part of ongoing efforts to revamp the village's business district after McDonald's relocated its headquarters to Chicago.

Currently, Oak Brook gains substantial revenue from the sales tax that benefits from its thriving business district near 22nd and Route 83. As a result, residents have to pay no village tax.
