Plans For $2M Bike Path Approved In Oak Brook

The bike path will link two other paths along Harger Road.

OAK BROOK, IL — The Oak Brook Board of Trustees recently approved a $2 million plan to construct a bike path that would link two other bike paths in the village. The planned path would provide a way for cyclists to navigate between the two paths that currently wind down Harger Road, Chicago Tribune reports.

The village plans to build a standalone bridge to bring the two Harger Road paths together in a way that will bypass vehicle traffic in that area, Oak Brook Village Works Director Doug Patchin told Chicago Tribune. Currently, cyclists have to use the shoulder of the road, something that has caused increasing concerns about safety.

Oak Brook won't shell out the $2 million for the bike path until 2019, but has spent just over $117,000 thus far for the initial design. According to Chicago Tribune, the remainder of the funding for the bike path project will be provided by an infrastructure fund and possibly through grants.
