Portillo's Celebrates Birthday With Chocolate Cake For 55 Cents

The Oak Brook-based restaurant chain is turning 55, but it's the customers who are receiving the gift of a discounted dessert.

Portillo's might be celebrating its 55th birthday next month, but it's the Chicago area hot dog restaurant chain's who'll be able to eat the cake. On April 4, Portillo's will be offering its chocolate cake for 55 cents at all its locations while slices last, the company announced this week.

There is a slight catch: Customers need to buy a hot dog, sandwich, entree salad, pasta or ribs in order to get the specially priced slice, which normally costs $3. Online orders are not included in this promotion.

Even though Portillo's is known for its hot dogs, the restaurant also has received a fair share of love for its cake. Last year, the Oak Brook-based chain brought back its lemon cake — a dessert that hadn't been served there for a decade — for a limited time in the summer thanks to the urgings of a persistent Reddit user.
