$1.36M From State Will Help Pay For Oak Forest Road Work

OAK FOREST, IL — The State of Illinois will be picking up the tab on a slew of Oak Forest road construction projects this summer. The City Council unanimously passed an ordinance last week that allows officials to use $1.36 million in state money for work done between May 1 and April 30, 2019, the Daily Southtown reports.

Although the funding will cover most of the costs of the summer street maintenance, it doesn't mean Oak Forest won't be spending some of its own money on the projects, the report stated. The city will still be on the hook for $170,000, an amount that might have been even higher if not for a South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association, the report added.

The following projects construction projects will be earmarked to receive the money:

  • road work for parts of 150th Street, Maple Drive, Mission and Sunset avenues, and Lynn and Fawn courts
  • the streetscape project for Cicero Avenue
  • the culvert project for 159th Street and Cicero Avenue
  • routine spending for road salt, traffic signal upkeep, road crack sealing and other expenses.

The state money from the Department of Transportation that Oak Forest will receive comes from the following areas:

  • $700,000, motor fuel taxes
  • $435,000, state general fund transfers
  • $225,000, city gas taxes
