3 Oak Forest Businesses Fail Underage Tobacco Sale Checks

The checks are part of a statewide effort to curb illegal sales.

Three Oak Forest businesses were cited for selling tobacco to a minor, in the latest round of the "Kids Can't Buy Them Here" campaign.

The Oak Forest Police Department conducted tobacco compliance surveys at various retailers during the evening hours of Thursday, May 26.

A total of 23 locations were surveyed. The following businesses sold tobacco products to a minor:

• Seven Eleven at 4901 W. 167th Street
• Convenient Food Mart at 15103 S. Cicero Avenue
• Mobile Gas Station at 14701 S. Central Avenue

Identification was provided from the youth agents when requested at each of the businesses surveyed.

The following businesses and clerks were commended for taking a proactive approach in identifying minors under the age of 18 by not selling tobacco products to them.

• Eddy’s Liquor and Tobacco
• Dotty’s
• Marathon Gas Station
• Seven Eleven (Central Avenue)
• Shell Gas Station on 159th Street
• Foremost Liquors
• Citgo Gas Station
• Stop and Go
• Aisha’s Golo Food Mart
• Food 4 Less
• Food 4 Less Fuel Station
• BP Amoco
• Swagat Foods
• Tracy’s Bistro
• Walgreens
• Shell Gas Station on 167th Street
• Rose Liquors

One location is temporarily closed.

Tobacco compliance surveys are funded through a grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. The purpose of the K.C.B.T.H. program is to determine which businesses may be selling tobacco products to minors (persons under 18 years of age) within the city. Each retailer who is found in violation of the can be fined from $200 up to $500. The public is reminded that the charges are merely accusations and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
