Bremen Wrestling Building Team & Looking to Qualify for State

There's a lot going on in the world of wrestling at Bremen High School.

While the team primarily consists of freshman and sophomore wrestlers, there are still quite a few star athletes on this team who are hungry for a state title this year. One of these wrestlers is Team Captain, Basilio Betancourt.

Betancourt is currently at junior at Bremen High School and is ranked seventh in the state of Illinois in the 182 lb. weight class. Betancourt has qualified for state both his freshman and sophomore year of high school and is looking forward to another promising season.

So far, hard work has payed off for Betancourt. He has only lost one match at the Harvard High School tournament held in December. He lost to a wrestler from Prairie Ridge High School who is currently ranked at number three in the same weight class.

The wrestling coaching staff for the Bremen Braves includes Mike Collins, Craig Collins, Mike Lynch, Tom Piotrowski, and Tom O'Shea.

The team consists of student athletes who compete in eight different weight classes.

"It's a younger crew," says Head Varsity Coach, Mike Collins. "We are trying to enroll the team in as many tournaments as possible so they can get the experience and practice. We are letting them grow and develop so that when they are juniors and seniors they'll be seeing the results of their hard work and dedication."

There are currently two matches left for the Bremen Wrestlers before IHSA Regionals. The Braves compete next in the SSC Championship on Saturday, January 25th at Argo High School at 9am.
