Garage Sale Signs: How Oak Forest Says To Display Them

All garage sale signs must be placed on private property, according to the City of Oak Forest.

OAK FOREST, IL — During the summer, it is common to host a garage sale to clear out property and even to mingle with neighbors. While a garage sale can be fun, Oak Forest wants to make sure residents properly advertise them.

The City of Oak Forest is reminding residents not to display garage sale signs on public property.

When residents have garage sales, they typically want to advertise them and place signs around town. But Oak Forest is telling residents that signs cannot be located on public property.

According to the city, the following indicate how signs must be located on private property:

  • All exempt signs cannot be non-illuminated unless otherwise stated.
  • All exempt ground signs shall be no closer than five feet from the paved portion of any street or back of curb where no sidewalk is present, no closer than two feet from a sidewalk, and shall be on private property.
  • All exempt ground signs shall not be allowed within any sight triangle, as defined in Section 12-206(S) of this Code.

The city said a sight triangle is a triangular area, described by the edge of pavement lines of two intersecting streets and a line connecting said edge of pavement lines, in which the height of structures and landscaping regulation is limited to a maximum of two and one-half feet above grade in order to promote visibility at street intersections.

Any leg of such a triangle lying along any street in a residential district or any street forming part of an intersection that is not controlled by a traffic signal or a stop sign shall be a minimum of 45 feet in length, according to the city.
