Phase 2 of Cicero Avenue Makeover Under Way in Oak Forest

The project includes new LED street lights, sidewalks, concrete parkways, bike racks, and furniture.

Oak Forest, Illinois – The long-awaited second phase of the Cicero Avenue streetscape project is officially under way.

The makeover, which includes new LED street lights, sidewalks, concrete parkways, bike racks, and furniture, began earlier this week on the east side of Cicero Avenue between 151st and 155th streets.

“Reinvestment in our commercial corridors is an essential part of attracting new businesses and visitors to our community,” said Travis Bandstra, Oak Forest's economic and community development director. “The enhancements will make walking and driving along Cicero Avenue a more pleasant experience for residents and visitors, and create a sense of pride for our local community.”

As part of this streetscape project, the city is replacing 45-year-old mercury vapor lighting infrastructure with energy efficient LED street and pedestrian lighting on ornamental poles. The sidewalk work will include barrier curb removal and driveway apron replacement – making the area compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Parkway areas between the new sidewalks and Cicero Avenue will be paved with decorative-stamped concrete. The work is expected to be completed by winter. In the spring, residents and visitors traveling along Cicero Avenue will enjoy new flower planters, bike racks, and benches near Pace bus stops.
