Rabid: 1 of 'Several' Bats Found in Crestwood Residence

State health officials have detected rabies in one of several bats that were recently removed from a home in nearby Crestwood.

CRESTWOOD, IL - State health officials have detected rabies in one of several bats that were recently removed from a home in nearby Crestwood.

The home's owner contacted Cook County Animals and Rabies Control on Aug. 15 to report finding several bats inside his or her residence in the 14000 block of Dori Lane in Crestwood.

The unspecified number of mammals was submitted to the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory for rabies examination on Aug. 16, according to a city of Oak Forest community alert. One tested positive for rabies.

"All Oak Forest residents should keep their dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when out of their homes," the notice said. "If your animal does not have a current rabies vaccination, have the pet immediately inoculated with rabies vaccine."

Officials are also reminding residents that they should not handle bats, skunks or other wild animals. In the event of an animal bite, seek medical attention.

Additionally, call the Oak Forest Police Department at 708-687-1376 if you find any dead or injured bats or skunks on your property.
