'Trooper Down': State Trooper Hurt in Attack on Tri-State Tollway

A search is on for the suspect. The incident happened near South Holland Monday evening. Listen to the police radio call.

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL — An Illinois State Trooper was injured Monday evening during a confrontation with a suspicious man on the Tri-State Tollway.

The trooper was wounded in the neck during the incident at the Halsted Street Toll Plaza near South Holland. A "shots fired" emergency call went out over the police band radio, and police units from many surrounding suburbs converged on the location.

A weapon was found at the scene, but it's unclear if the suspect is still armed. State Police said in a statement to the news media that the trooper struggled with the man and the man's gun discharged but the trooper was not shot.

The trooper was transported to a hospital. His condition is not currently known. He was taken to Ingalls Hospital in Harvey.

Police are searching for the suspect—described only as a black male wearing a construction vest and black jeans —as of 7:45 p.m., with the assistance of K9 and aerial units. The man reportedly ran northbound away from the toll plaza.

Police have filled the roadway near the Halsted Street exit. The westbound lanes were blocked throughout the evening.
