Armed Robberies, Domestic Battery, Stolen Tiffany's Jewelry: Oak Park Police Blotter

Two armed robberies and a handful of thefts took place during the past week.

Armed robberies

  • A man entered the CY Beauty Supply on W. North Ave. on Nov. 5, showed an employee that he had a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded she give him money. He took the woman’s phone — a Samsung Galaxy — and $700 in cash from the store before fleeing. The suspect is described as a black male between 23 and 30 years old. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a blue zip-up Under Armour hoodie, acid wash jeans and white gym shoes.
  • A man, described as a black male in his 20’s with a thin build and short hair, approached a victim from behind Nov. 3 and tried to grab their backpack. When the victim turned, police reported, the man revealed a black semi-automatic handgun and said, “Hey, homie, just give it to me.” He left with the backpack, which contained $50 worth of goods.

  • Benedette Njoku, 46, of S. Lombard Ave. was arrested and charged with domestic battery Nov. 7.
  • Anthony Sanchez, 43, was arrested Nov. 6 and charged with domestic battery.

Burglaries and thefts

  • An unknown offender broke into a vacant house on the 800 block of N. Ridgeland between Oct. 14 and Nov. 2 and stole 20 feet of copper pipe, a full furnace system and a water heater system. The burglar used an unknown kind of cutting saw to complete the job, police reported. The total loss tallies up to $12,000.
  • A boy’s red cruiser bike, valued at $200, was stolen from a bike rack on the 100 block of S. Oak Park St. Nov. 3. The bike was locked to the rack. Police didn’t release the name of the victim since he’s a minor.
  • Another bike, valued around $300, was stolen from the 200 block of N. Scoville between Nov. 2 and Nov. 3. The bike was a men’s dark gray 20-inch Redline Recon fixed-gear bicycle. It was locked to a pole at the time.
  • Sometime in the late evening on Nov. 3, an Oak Park resident’s brass flag pole displaying the Cubs “W” flag was stolen from their front porch on S. Highland. The total estimated loss is $50.
  • An unknown person got into an unlocked white Dodge Charger Nov. 5 and stole an Apple iPhone valued at $600. They also stole a black leather wallet. The Charger was parked on the 100 block of S. Humphrey, and the crime took place shortly before 2 p.m. that day.
  • Someone stole two canvas shopping bags left on the curb of S. Wesley St. Nov. 5, taking with them Pandora bracelets, a Tiffany necklace, earrings, a ring, a handbag and women’s clothing. The total estimated loss was $3,565.
  • Goldie Blake, 54, was arrested on a warrant Nov. 5 for an Oak Park theft and two counts of deceptive practices. She was held for bond hearings.
  • An Oak Park resident lost $750 worth of belongings when someone broke into their S. Kenilworth home and stole a stereo, air compressor and two scaffolding platforms from the backyard.

Attempted robbery

  • A man, described as a black male between 18 and 20 years old, rode up on a BMX bicycle behind a woman on S. Austin St. and and grabbed her purse from her shoulder. The woman struggled, causing the pair to fall to the ground and giving two witnesses time to intervene. The man fled from the scene on his bike.
