Artisanal Pie Bake-Off Planned For Oak Park Farmer's Market

All the pies will be made from scratch with ingredients from the farmer's market and baked in recyclable pans.

OAK PARK, IL — Oak Park's inaugural pie bake-off was so popular in 2017 that the village is doing it all over again. Bakers will bring their best pies — made from scratch with ingredients from the Oak Park Farmer's Market— to the farmer's market on Sept. 1 for the village's second annual Pie Bake-Off.

This year, more than a dozen bakers have thrown their pie pans into the ring to try to win over a panel of three judges with their inventive recipes. The competitors submitted their recipes ahead of the bake-off, but the judges will rate the pies without knowing whose entry they're sampling, according to a post on the village's website.

Scoring will be done on a points-based system that takes into how the pie looks, how creatively the baker used ingredients from the farmer's market, and, of course, how the pie tastes. In fact, flavor is so important that it counts for double points.

The top three bakers will be honored with ribbons and a gift from the farmer's market.

After judging wraps up, visitors to the farmer's market will have a chance to dig into the delicious entries. Slices will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis and available only until the last crumb is gobbled up.
