Concordia University Chicago to Host Mystery Writing Event for Young Readers

The event will take place just a week before Halloween.

Concordia University Chicago in River Forest will be hosting five Chicago-area mystery authors for a presentation about writing and publishing for young readers later this month.

On Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m., the University’s Center for Literacy will co-host the event, which is being called “Tricks (and Treats) for Writing for Young Readers,” with the Midwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America.

  • Kate Hannigan: Author of The Detective’s Assistant, winner of the 2016 Golden Kite Award for best middle-grade novel from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators
  • Keir Graff: Author of middle-grade books The Other Felix and The Matchstick Castle, executive editor of Booklist publications
  • Michelle Falkoff: Author of young adult novels Pushing Perfect and Playlist for the Dead
  • Amy Cattapan: Author of middle-grade book Seven Riddles to Nowhere
  • Natasha Tarpley: Author of best-selling picture book I Love My Hair! and middle-grade book The Harlem Charade, co-founder of Voonderbar!, a multicultural children’s book publisher

All authors are members of the Midwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America.

This event is free and, though its title specifies a younger demographic, open to writers and readers of all ages. Signed books from each author will be available for purchase at the event.

“Tricks (and Treats)” will be take place on Concordia’s campus at 7400 Augusta St. in River Forest, in the Christopher Center’s room 200. Free parking will be available.
