Police Chase Ends When Driver Hits 80 MPH: River Forest Police Blotter

River Forest police reports, Jan. 7-13.

SUNDAY, JAN. 13

Retail Theft Reported

Police were dispatched to Shell gas station around 4:14 p.m. for a report of retail theft. An employee told police that a woman came into the station store, picked up several items of packaged food products and then ran to a waiting car and fled. The total loss was estimated at $6.45.

DUI Arrest

An officer on patrol in the area of Thatcher and Oak reported seeing a southbound car driving without its lights on at about 12:24 a.m. When officers stopped the car, they said the driver showed signs of being intoxicated. Following field sobriety tests, the driver was transported to the station.

John P. Griffin, 18, of the 700 block of Thatcher in River Forest, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to yield at an intersection, operating a motor vehicle without lights and improper lane usage. Police reported his blood alcohol content was .127. Griffin was later released on bond.

Police Seek Driver for Fleeing at 80 mph

An officer on patrol in the 7500 block of North Avenue said a green Toyota Corolla driving westbound at 50 mph in a 30-mph zone. The officer attempted to stop the car, but it accelerated and made several lane changes in an attempt to evade police. The officer caught up with the car in an attempt to identify the suspect, but slowed down when the offending car reached 80 mph.

Police sent a description of the offender and the car across the area and efforts are still being made to locate and arrest the offender.

FRIDAY, JAN. 11

Resident Reports Scam

A resident called police around 8:51 a.m. after receiving several calls from a man who said he was an agent of the Food and Drug Administration and told them they owed a $2000 fine for illegally purchasing drugs online. Police notified the Illinois Attorney General's office of the scam and told the resident to call again if they received another call.

THURSDAY, JAN. 10

Condoms Stolen

A manager at CVS Pharmacy, 7929 North Ave., reported that a man placed a box of condoms in his pocket and left the store without paying at about 7:40 p.m. The manager confronted the man, who kept walking to a waiting car and fled. Video surveillance was secured and police are still investigating.

TUESDAY, JAN. 8

Drunk Tried to Enter Resident's Car

Officers responded to the area of Greenfield and Ashland around 2:21 p.m. after a resident was confronted by a man who appeared drunk and tried to enter her car. The man was later located in a park near Greenfield and Franklin where he was taken into protective custody and transported by ambulance for observation.

Spray Paint, Fireworks Found in Backpack

A resident told police they found a black backpack with green writing near an outdoor garbage can around 12:15 p.m. Inside, police found cans of spray paint and small fireworks.

MONDAY, JAN. 7

Residential Burglary Reported

Officers were sent to a home in the 500 block of Edgewood after a resident discovered their home had been burglarized. The residents of the home told police they returned at about 3:30 p.m. and during the following hours realized that several items were missing. Police determined that someone had forced entry to the home through a small basement window and removed personal computers, iPads and an electronic reader. Police are still investigating.
