Oak Park Apartment Building Suffers Devastating Fire, Leaving 9 Homeless

The fire started in the building's basement around 1:15 a.m. Friday.

OAK PARK, IL — An Oak Park apartment building suffered a massive fire early Friday morning that left nine people homeless, CBS reported.

Crews from more than a dozen nearby fire departments responded to the extra-alarm blaze around 1:15 a.m. Feb. 10, according to CBS. The fire reportedly started in the basement of the three-story structure in the 300 block of West Washington Street.

Residents of the building were all able to get out on their own, WGN-TV reported. The apartment building’s management staff were able to provide temporary housing in a hotel for their tenants, but nine people have been temporarily displaced as a result of the fire.

The Chicago Tribune reported that one firefighter was treated at the scene of the fire for a minor injury, but no one else was hurt.

The flames were extinguished in 90 minutes, according to the Tribune. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
