Oak Park Police Offer Seasonal Crime Prevention Tips
Oak Park Police have released a list of tips to help residents prevent crime during the holiday season.

OAK PARK, IL — The holiday season can be notorious for an increase in scams and crimes. To help residents protect themselves during the holidays, the Oak Park Police Department recently released a list of crime prevention tips. They hope to "raise public awareness of some common crimes of the season by offering the following tips to help reduce the chances of becoming a victim."
Auto Burglaries
Oak Park Police note that offenders may look for valuables that have been left in cars. They advise keeping vehicle locked, especially if you're making multiple trips to and from your vehicle to carry gifts to your home.

Vehicle Thefts
Since many people have to warm up their cars during cold weather, this season also sees an increase in auto thefts. Oak Park Police remind residents that leaving a vehicle running while unattended is not only illegal, it also greatly increases the chances of that vehicle getting stolen.

Pickpocketing and Stealing
Oak Park Police urge residents to keep an eye on their purses, bags, coats, and wallets at all times. They note that pickpockets and thieves "like bags and purses hanging on chair backs, left in shopping carts, sitting unattended or simply set down while the owner answers a telephone or is otherwise distracted."
Package Thieves
Oak Park and other suburbs have seen a recent increase in package thefts during this holiday season. These so-called "porch pirates" remove delivery packages from porches and doorsteps outside homes. Oak Park Police recommend making an arrangement with a friend, neighbor, or family member to have them watch for your package so it is not left unattended.
