OPRF Junior's Intricate 'Google Doodle' Is the Illinois Finalist

OPRF junior Emma Vejcik is the Illinois finalist in Google's national Doodle contest for students in grades K-12. The public can vote for her to win the national level by casting one vote a day at Doodle4Google.com, starting at 9:00 p.m. on Feb. 23 through March 6.

Sen. Don Harmon was on hand this morning to congratulate Emma on her accomplishment, for which she won a tablet computer. If Emma wins the national award, she'll not only have her Doodle artwork featured on the Google landing page on March 31, but she'll also win a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for OPRF High School.

Google describes its Doodles as the "fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists." For this contest, students were asked to submit a Doodle based on the theme "What I See for the Future." Emma, who lives by the "L" and said she hears it "all day and all night," entitled her Doodle "An 'L' - evated Future" and created a vision of transportation ranging from underground trains to spacecraft.
