Fatal 15-Car Pileup on I-290 Caused by Slick Road (Update)

One man dead; 4 people hurt. Outbound lanes of Eisenhower Expressway shut down for hours. Icy conditions affected highways in the area.

CHICAGO — The overnight cold, snow and sleet led to slick conditions on the Eisenhower Expressway early Saturday morning, causing a 15-car collision that killed a man.

A 71-year-old man died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Three others were hurt. Black ice caused the chain-reaction pileup on I-290 near Central about 12:40 a.m., according to State Police. The crash shut down the outbound lanes, which remained closed until about 10:30 a.m. from Laramie to Austin for the accident investigation.

Sean David, who was involved in the crash, told WGN he saw cars everywhere, hit the brakes and slid into the unavoidable pileup.

Initially reported as a 13-car crash, State Police said there were actually five crashes that involved as many as 15 vehicles, with the vehicles ending up in a massive pileup that shut down outbound I-290 until late morning.

The others hurt in the crash did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

The man killed in the Eisenhower Expressway crash has been identified as chef and restaurateur Chef Jean-Claude Poilevey, a resident of Oak Park and a noted Chicago chef for many decades.

Icy conditions caused trouble on several roadways early this morning. IDOT crews shut down the westbound I-80 ramp to northbound I-94 around between 6 and 7 a.m. to salt the highway due to cars sliding, spinning out and crashing into the ditch.

A crash this morning also shut down the southbound lanes of I-57 near 127th Street, but all lanes are now open to traffic.
