Naperville Woman Drove Around Gates, Hit Train: Sheriff

A 48-year-old woman was listed in critical condition after being airlifted from the crash scene with multiple injuries and broken bones.

WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP, IL — Oswego fire officials said one occupant of a vehicle was airlifted via Lifestar helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital's trauma center after a crash involving a vehicle and a train at 3:51 p.m. Sunday. Officials said the incident happened at Wolf's Crossing and Normantown Road.

The Naperville and Aurora fire departments also responded.

The Will County Sheriff's Office said Naperville firefighters extricated the woman, age 48, from a 2017 Honda. She was reportedly in and out of consciousness after suffering numerous injuries, including broken bones.

As of Sunday night, she was listed in critical condition.

Will County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said witnesses reported that the Honda passed two other vehicles in the opposite lane of traffic heading westbound on Wolf's Crossing. The woman reportedly drove around the gates and struck the side of the train after the train engine had already crossed the roadway.

The Canadian National Railway train was heading south and was not damaged in the crash, Hoffmeyer said.

Will County Sheriff's deputies continue to investigate the crash. No tickets have been issued.
