Labor Day 2018: What's Open, Closed Around Oswego

OSWEGO, IL — The dog days of summer are winding down, and we get one last weekend before the school year and fall activities get into full swing. Labor Day 2018 is Monday, Sept. 3. And while it's a day of rest and relaxation for many, it's also a federal holiday, meaning many local services and offices will be closed.

Most big-box retailers will be open — and many are offering Labor Day deals — but smaller businesses and mom and pop stores might be closed, so it's a good idea to call ahead.

Garbage pickup will be delayed one day the week of Labor Day.

What's going on: Labor Day Weekend 2018: Fun Things To Do In Illinois

Also good to know:

  • Metra's $10 weekend pass will include Monday for Labor Day weekend; kids younger than 11 can ride for free.
  • On Friday, Aug. 31, Metra will modify service to accommodate passengers leaving early to celebrate Labor Day Weekend. Trains will operate on an Early Getaway schedule on most lines. Full schedules are here.
  • On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, Metra will operate all services on a Sunday/holiday schedule. Metra's SouthWest Service, Heritage Corridor and North Central Service lines will not operate on Labor Day.
  • Alcohol restrictions will also be in effect and no alcohol will be allowed onboard Metra trains all day Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2.
  • Up to three children age 11 and under will be able to ride free with each adult through Labor Day.
  • Road construction is limited on Labor Day weekend, but the Illinois Tollway is anticipating around 8 million cars on the roads this weekend, with the heaviest traffic on Friday: Labor Day Weekend 2018: Worst Times To Travel, Routes To Avoid
