More Than $30K Spent Quelling Aurora Riots: Kendall Co. Sheriff

Sheriff Dwight Baird said $32,000 was spent in overtime to help Aurora police respond to riots May 31-June 1.

KENDALL COUNTY, IL — According to the Kendall County Sheriff's Office, it spent more than $30,000 in overtime to help Aurora police respond to riots three weeks ago.

Sheriff Dwight Baird told the Kendall County Board during its meeting Tuesday that from May 31-June 6, the office spent nearly $32,000, adding that about $30,400 was spent on the patrol side and $2,600 on the corrections side for the sheriff's office.

"That overtime line for patrol was looking really good until that happened," he said. "But I’m still optimistic that we’ll continue to trend and may not require any adjustments."

The update comes after Baird said during a June 2 County Board meeting that 17 Kendall County Sheriff's deputies assisted Aurora police On May 31. He had also said two deputies assisted Joliet police the same evening and deputies also helped Naperville and Aurora police on June 1.

He had also said some sheriff's office staff got hit with flying debris, and one of the Oswego officers in the Kendall County SWAT team got hit with a brick on his shoulder.

Baird said the budget's patrol section is currently below 50 percent funded because of employee back pay that wasn’t originally budgeted due to union contract negotiations. Corrections has not settled their contract yet, he added.

"I will continue to monitor this as we get closer to the end of the year," he said.

Baird said he may send a request to the County Board at a later date for a budget amendment to cover the aforementioned back pay costs.
