Oswego School Board Holds Hearing On Driver's Ed Fee Hike

A public hearing will be held Jan. 8 so the public can weigh in on the proposal that could help alleviate deficit concerns.

OSWEGO, IL — School District 308 will hold a public hearing Jan. 8 to discuss the possibility of increasing the amount driver's ed from $250 to $400. The public can weigh in on a waiver, which, if approved, would allow the district to charge a student that much to learn how to drive. This route is one way the district could find some relieve as they try to negotiate a projected $11 million deficit by the year 2023.

A driver's education course with Indian Prairie School District 204 costs $350. Yorkville School District 115 charges $315. Plainfield 202 is $300, according to their websites. Kendall County Now reported that raising the cost to $400 would create around $139,000 in additional revenue for the district.

Oswego 308's hearing will be held at 7 p.m. in the community room of Oswego East High School at 1525 Harvey Road. The board will publicly vote to either grant or deny the proposed application for a waiver. The next board of directors meeting will take place Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 in the community room at Oswego East High School.

Following public comment, the board will vote whether or not to authorize the submission of the application to waive the $250 fee limitation, which would authorize a fee up to $400. The district will petition the State Board of Education for the waiver only if it passes, according to Theresa Komitas, director of communications for the school district.
