The Oswego Fire Protection District Lt. Jason Sipes was recently honored by the Inspiring Women of Oswego with their First Responder award. Inspiring Women of Oswego is a committee of the Oswego Chamber of Commerce. On Nov. 16, they held their annual dinner on where they honored some local individuals by “giving out several awards to people who inspire us,” according to a news release from the OFPD.
Lt. Sipes was selected to receive the Fire First Responder Award in large part due to his taking ownership of the Fire District’s mentorship of the part-time program - ensuring that all new members complete and attain measurable goals and required skills prior to being released for duty.
With Lt. Sipes oversight, this program has been formalized and put in place across the board for all new members, according to the release. This not only provides the new firefighters with a sense of accomplishment, but also the Fire District and the other firefighters working alongside them, the full acknowledgement that the basics of “how we do things at Owego Fire” have been learned by the new firefighters.
