Oswego Robotics Teams to Compete in Highland Park Saturday

Students from both Oswego High School and Oswego East are competing.

The Oswego FIRST Robotics Team will be competing this Saturday in Highland Park for a robotics competition. The OFRT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting one FRC and four First Tech Challenge robotics teams.

The First Tech Challenge teams have 15 team members from both Oswego High School and Oswego East High School. The FTC teams are now only in the second year and have expanded to add our fourth team. The students participate in a variety of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs. Students have been working on their projects since September.

The competition will be held at Highland Park High School at 433 Vine Avenue in Highland Park. Opening ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. with awards and closing ceremonies at 5 p.m.

FIRST Tech Challenge teams are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!” Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills (science, technology, engineering, and math) and practice engineering principles (like design, project management, marketing and keeping an engineering notebook), while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas.

The robots are built by the students and are programmed using a variety of languages, including Java. Teams also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards.
