Oswego Senior Center Announces Upcoming Events
The Oswego Senior Center is offering several different programs during the months of May, June, July and August.
OSWEGO, IL--Oswego Senior Center Senior Conference
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14
The Oswego Senior Center invites area seniors to drop in for a conference that focuses on “Connect, Create and Contribute,” the theme of 2019 Older American's Month. The program features a lineup of speakers that aim to inspire and empower everyone to keep connecting, creating and contributing as they look forward to 25 to 40 years of retirement.

The keynote speaker is Marc Blesoff, a conscious aging facilitator for the Institute of Noetic Sciences.
Concurrent education sessions during the conference will address several topics, including: Holistic Medicine, Civic Engagement, Gardening Home Modification, The Arts, World of Honey, Spirituality, Laughing for your Health with Madeline Holstrom and more.

Lunch will be provided, courtesy of Symphony at the Tillers. Also during the conference, Cedarhurst Senior Living is planning to offer a continental breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Eating a Plant-based Diet
12:30 to 1:30 p.m. May 10
A plant-based diet is a recommendation that many doctors are making these days, along with exercise. Oswego Senior Center is looking to provide the public ways to make a plant-based diet more exciting. A program, called “Beans & Legumes,” will be presented by Karen Kelly, RD. Anyone interested in attending the program is asked to RSVP by calling 630-554-5602.
Groot Recycling
11 a.m. May 22
Where does Our Recycling Go—the Process & What?
Groot will be discussing the best practices for customers for the recycling program at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington St. Attendees will learn what to recycle, why some things are no longer recyclable and the recycle markets current state. Everyone has a carbon footprint, learn how that affects the recycle market. The public is encouraged to register by calling 630 -554-5602.
Employment Series:
11 a.m. May 15
Oswego Senior Center invites the public to learn how to create a resume using Google Docs. Participants will set up a Google account--if they do not already have one—and will use Google Docs to create a resume that can be used to apply for jobs online. Anyone interested in the program is encouraged to RSVP by calling 630-554-5602.
International Cooking
10 a.m. to 12 p.m. May 17
This month, at the Oswego Senior Center, the public is invited to experience the comfort foods of Norway as they make Norwegian Meatballs with noodles. Those interested will get the opportunity to explore the world through their palate in this monthly series. RSVP and pay at registration to reserve a spot, as space is limited. The cost is $5.00. Caregiver Support Group
11 a.m. May 17
The Oswego Senior Center is planning to host its monthly support group for those who have found themselves in a caregiving role. This group offers support, ideas, resources and hope on the sometimes, heavy journey through caregiving. Contact Beth Peshia for more information at 630-554-5602.
Free Depression Screening
9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 15
Depression can be a tricky disease due to many challenges, including social stigma, the misbelief that one can just pull themselves out of it, or just not recognizing symptoms as depression. Compounding all of that is depression at work, eroding an individual’s sense of value, which then makes it hard to seek help. Research says that depression can have genetic roots, can be triggered by environmental and social concerns, and by physical illness, particularly chronic diseases like heart disease.
While there is a long list of possible symptoms, depression doesn’t look the same for everyone. Depression is not a normal part of aging and depression is treatable. The Oswego Senior Center is looking to offer a free depression screening with referral services to help get those in need get started. Heart and Bones Fitness Class
2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays
The Oswego Senior Center has announced new times and days for the Heart & Bones Fitness class. The new instructor, Nancy, has many years experience in exercise instruction and is anxious to get everyone going. Those interested are encouraged to drop in for this free fitness class that encompasses cardio, resistance and strength training.
Painting Party with Carolyn
1:30 p.m. May 21
This month, canvas painting at the Oswego Senior Center will be featuring a small watering can. Sign-up is required. A $20 fee will cover the cost of materials. Payment is required at registration.
Scam Awareness Day
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7
Everyday, trusting-good people get duped by crafty criminals and dishonest individuals. The Oswego Senior Center wants to help people to learn ways from a panel of experts how to keep yourself, loved ones and your property safe. Lunch is included. The public is encouraged to RSVP by June 5 by calling 630-554-5602.
I & M Canal Boat Tour & Lunch Night
June 5
The Oswego Senior Center is hosting a group day tour for a journey back in time aboard the “Volunteer,” a 70-passenger, mule-pulled 1840’s replica canal boat, as it coasts up and down the Illinois & Michigan Canal. The trip boards at LaSalle. Lunch is included with the tour and transportation. The cost is $45 per person. Payment must accompany reservation at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Nite Club at Noon “That 60’s Show”
June 19
The Oswego Senior Center is planning to host a day tour group for Chicago to a premier host of luncheon shows. Nite Club at Noon features internationally famous stars, as well as the top night club performers currently working around Chicago and the suburbs. The cost is $60 per person, and it includes show, lunch and transportation. Payment is due at registration at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington St. For information, call 630-554-5602.
Quilts and Amish Tour
Aug. 20—4-Day Motor Coach
The cost is $990.00 per person for double occupancy. Held in conjunction with the Quilt Week Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this tour includes
- four quilt fabric shops visits
- floral gardens that inspire quilt patterns
- participation in an Amish Quilting Bee
- attendance at the All Star Review
- viewing of over 500 beautifully designed quilts and participation in a variety of workshops
- demonstrations conducted by highly skilled instructors

Spirit of Peoria River Cruise
July 9—3-Day Motor Coach
The cost is $865.00 per person double occupancy.
A tour of the newly renovated Governor’s Mansion and a visit to the Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield will kick off a trip on the Mississippi River. The Oswego Senior Center will provide those interested with a chance to spend a day with meals on the Spirit of Peoria Sternwheeler, enjoying the passing scenery and onboard live entertainment. The final day includes a homecooked meal in an Amish home, as those interested travel through the Illinois Amish countryside. The Oswego Senior Center invites the public to enjoy this traditional summer excursion on the river. The cost is $865.00 per person for double occupancy. Oswego Senior Center Congregate Meal Program
The Oswego Senior Center offers congregate lunch to seniors ages 60 and older Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week at noon. Bistro lunch is provided on Tuesday at noon. Reservations are required by calling 630-554-5602 by 10am the business day prior. A suggested $5 donation will be accepted.
Monday, May 13: Baked Lasagna with Meat Sauce, Broccoli, Garlic Bread and Ice Cream.
Tuesday, May 14: Senior Conference - No Open Lunch.
Wednesday, May 15: Cheese Enchiladas, Mexican Style Rice, Mexican Three Bean Salad, Polvorones de Canela (Cinnamon Cookies).
Thursday, May 16: Baked Ham w Honey Mustard Glaze, Baked Potato, Peas & Carrots, Bowtie Salad, Bread and Baked Cookies.
