Tax Help, Icelandic Cooking: Events At The Oswego Senior Center

OSWEGO, IL — Here are all the upcoming events at the Oswego Senior Center.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)Program — Mondays by appointment

VITA specialists at the Oswego Senior Center are taking appointments for free tax filing for seniors 60 years or older, persons with disabilities and students. Income must be below $55,000 annually. You will need to bring the following to your appointment:

Proof of identification (photo ID); Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents; Proof of foreign status, if applying for ITIN. Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on tax return; Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W2-G)1099-R, 1099 Misc) from all employers; Interest & dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099); Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received; A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available; Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check.

To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms; Total paid for daycare and daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number; Forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements; Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable.

Alzheimer's, Dementia Research & Latest Understandings — Friday, March 1, 10 a.m.

Raj C. Shah, MD, associate professor of family medicine with the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center will present “Alzheimer's, Dementia Research & Latest Understandings” at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington. Community members of all ages are invited to attend.

Dr. Shah is board certified in family medicine with a certificate of added qualification in geriatrics. Shah's academic career interest is the design and conduct of community-based clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of age-related conditions including, but not limited to, memory loss.

Dr. Shah is a principal investigator for clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease and other common age-related conditions. He serves on the international steering committee and is site principal investigator for the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly prevention clinical trial. He also provides support for ongoing longitudinal research and infrastructure projects on memory and aging, including the Rush Memory and Aging Project, the Rush Religious Orders Study, the Rush Minority Aging and Research Study, the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Core Center, the Rush Center of Excellence on Disparities in HIV and Aging, and the Rush Memory Clinic Data and Specimen Repository. Dr. Shah is the Rush site principal, investigator for the All of Us Research Program of the NIH's Precision Medicine Initiative. His research manuscripts focus on non-neurological, modifiable factors associated with disability-free longevity in aging and novel clinical trial design and implementation.

Dr. Shah oversees education, community engagement and recruitment efforts of the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center, especially in communities under-represented in aging research. Dr. Joel Okner presents “Heart Health” — Tuesday, Feb. 26, 11 a.m. -noon

Heart disease remains one of the top 3 killers, learning about ways to maintain heart health or to improve heart health will help your ticker keep tocking. Dr. Joel Okner, Medical Director for Heart for Life Cardiac Care Program at the Symphony at the Tillers, will also present what congestive heart failure is, treatment and prognosis. This Doctor Series presentation takes places at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Medicare Appeals Process — Wednesday, Feb. 27, 11 a.m.

Medicare can be tricky, when your services are denied it can be frustrating. Learn about Medicare Appeals, how to start an appeal and the process at this month’s Medicare Discussion Series at Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Health Habits for Successful Living Classes — Fridays, March 8-April 12

Designed to help you see through your New Year Resolutions of adopting a healthy lifestyle with healthy eating and physical activity. This 6-week class will demonstrate a variety of exercise and recipes for healthy eating while teaching good nutrition, mindfulness, and goal setting. This class will be offered at Oswego senior Center, 156 E. Washington St. in collaboration with Rush Copley Healthplex, University of Illinois Extension, Kendall County Health Department and Oswego Senior Center. Register at 630-554-5602.

Taste of Iceland: February International Cooking Class — Friday, Feb. 22, 10 a.m.-noon

This month at Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington, we are cooking like an Icelander! Try your cooking skill and taste palate in Viking Stew and Viking Brown Bread. Must pay in advance to reserve your spot as space is limited! $5.00 fee. Call 630-554-5602 today.

Zoom Room — Wednesday, Feb. 27, 1 p.m.

Come to Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington St. and learn how to use Zoom and have a discussion with seniors at Hanover Township Senior Center. We are looking to have monthly discussions with fellow seniors at centers across the nation and, eventually, the world.

Quilts and Amish Tour — Departs Aug. 20, 2019; 4 day motor coach trip

Join the Oswego Senior Center travelers for this trip which is in conjunction with the Quilt Week Convention in Grand Rapids, MI. This tour includes a visit to four quilt fabric shops, floral gardens that inspire quilt patterns, participation in an Amish Quilting Bee, attendance at the All-Star Review, viewing of over 500 beautifully designed quilts and participation in a variety of workshops and demonstrations conducted by highly skilled instructors. Mindfulness — Thursday, Feb. 21 and 28, 10 a.m.

Mindfulness is a way of revitalizing yourself as well as saving and growing your energy. In this 2-session class at Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington, you will learn that Mindfulness can increase your focus and reduce negative thoughts that can be overwhelming. By involving yourself in this practice, you may be able to improve your sleep, reduce your worries and accept what you can control and what you cannot. Presented by Jan Litvene, ACSW, LCSW. Oswego Senior Center Congregate Meal Program

The Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington, offers lunch to seniors (age 60 plus) Mondays and Thursday each week at noon and Wednesdays between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. (drop in style). Reservations are required by calling 630-554-5602 by 10 a.m. the business day prior. Suggested $5 donation.
