PALATINE, IL — All lanes of traffic along northwest highway in Palatine have reopened. Village officials in Palatine closed the westbound lanes of Northwest Highway in the 1400 block of the roadway Thursday after the road buckled. Eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane in the area, which is near the YMCA.

Traffic was being diverted onto Sterling Avenue and to Dundee Road, according to a village of Palatine Facebook post Thursday evening, and residents were encouraged to seek alternate routes.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, all lanes of traffic had reopened and traffic was flowing steadily in the area with no delays or backups. It appeared the area where the road buckled, just west of the Buehler YMCA, has been repaired.

Matt Berry, director of public works for the village of Palatine, said the Illinois Division of Transportation completed emergency repair work on U.S. 14 at about 1 a.m. on Friday, which allowed the village to reopen all lanes of traffic at that time.

The issue on the busy roadway and main thoroughfare through town caused extreme back ups in traffic. Some residents reported a 15 minute drive took them 50 minutes, and others said they were nearly late to pick up their kids from daycare due to the traffic issues, according to the village's Facebook page.

Several residents posted on the Palatine Patch requesting information on why roadways had been closed in town. Patch has reached out to the village for more information and will update when we hear back.
