Schaumburg Firefighters Working to Extinguish Cancer

Cancer doesn't take a vacation, and neither does the Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association, whose Firefighters Against Cancer Committee is already planning for its next Pink Tie Ball fundraiser, to be held at Oct. 18, 2014, at the Schaumburg Marriott.

This year's successful event raised about $25,000, three times as much as last year. The committee recently split the proceeds between the Alexian Brother's Breast Cancer Ambassadors in Elk Grove and to the American Cancer Society, for breast cancer research.

Mike Solberg, son of Palatine Village Councilman Greg Solberg, became a Schaumburg firefighter in October 2012. A couple months after being sworn-in, he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.

After surviving cancer, said Solberg, "I shifted my focus and energy into helping solve this terrible disease."

The mission of the Schaumburg Firefighters Against Cancer Committee, said Solberg, is to get as much exposure for next year's event as possible, to raise even more money for organizations working to find a cure for cancer.
