Two non-profits give specialized help to Palatine Library--but it is not enough

Palatine Public Library's meager tax income -- our library has

the second-largest population served in the Northwest suburbs, but gets
by with the least amount per person -- means it relies on two
non-profits for help.
Palatine residents formed two, independent,
non-profit organizations to help support Palatine Public Library
programs. Palatine Library itself serves nearly 90,000 residents in
Palatine and parts of four more communities. The Library is an
independent taxing district--it's not part of any other government
budget.

The Friends of the Library is a non-profit, volunteer organization
whose sole aim is to raise money for support of the Library. They raise
most of their funds through used book sales held several times a year at
the Library. The Friends pay for the prizes--those wonderful
t-shirts!--in the summer and winter reading programs. The Friends have
bought the library its van. They also provide some library furnishings,
materials and equipment.

Palatine Library Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization
that raises funds and advocates for the Library. The Foundation raises
funds for projects that could not be funded by tax dollars. The
Foundation can apply for grants which otherwise are not available to
public libraries.

And that's it. There is no where else to turn. Library expenses are
projected to rise faster than the income from the current tax rate.
Urgent repairs need to be made to the roof, lighting and ventilation.
The Library and its Board have been prudent, careful and open. After 44
years without asking for an operating tax increase, it is time for us to
Vote Yes on April 2.
