Why Do We Need the Library When You Can Google Everything?

“Why should we pay for the Library when you can Google for free?” a woman asked.

Because the Library gives everyone access to ad-free, scam-free,
expert-based databases that are better than Google. All you need is the
PIN on your Library card.

These digital databases are expensive--their annual subscriptions
cost the Library thousands of dollars a year. You can't access them on
Google unless you buy a subscription. But you can search them for free
with your Library PIN.

Voting Yes on April 2 will allow Palatine Library to continue to provide these databases to Palatine residents.

Here are some of the things you can research through the online databases at Palatine Public Library:

• Personal Finance: tips to making investment decisions and managing your finances
• Investment research: Stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, investment indexes
• Industry data: market research, industry overviews, technology analysis, profiles of companies, industry statistics
• Financial ratings for banks, credit unions, insurance companies, Medigap plans, common stock mutual funds
• Genealogy tools: census collections, military records, birth, marriage, death information, passenger lists, school and church histories
• Job search: downloadable resume templates, resume review, live interview coach, career search
• Research: magazines and journals online
• Consumer health
• Health topics
• Resources for health professionals and students
• Natural medicines
