The enjoyment of the outdoors during the warm summer months should be a benefit to every citizen of the City of Peoria. While there a number of outdoor activities, one that many enjoy is the relaxation around a recreational fire.

The Peoria Fire Department has approved these types of fires through the City of Peoria Open Burning Policy which can be found through the website: http://www.peoriagov.org/fire-department/

This policy highlights extremely important safety practices for a recreational fire such as the following:

  • They must be in an approved container as outlined in the ordinance
  • Only seasoned wood can be burned in the container
  • The container must remain at least 25 feet from any structure

Additionally, citizens should know how to properly dispose of hot coals and ash from these fires. First it essential that residents not only let this material cool down, but the fire department highly encourages the use of water to extinguish this material. Hot coals and ash should NEVER be placed in a trash receptacle of any type. Once the material is cooled down and water has been used the coals and ash should be placed in a metal container with a lid that seals. This container should once again not be placed with household waste as a further precaution.

The summer months can be fun and the outdoors enjoyable. The goal of the Peoria Fire Department is for everyone to enjoy the weather in a safe manner.
