The city of Peoria Public Works Department will begin to remove promotional and political signs that have been illegally placed in the City’s rights-of-way starting today, Friday, June 25.

Thousands of signs are placed on City property and within rights-of-ways each year and they can add to blight and litter, obstruct vision, and create added distraction for drivers.

“Many times we see these signs posted on light poles and near traffic signals – while they may seem harmless, their presence can be a nuisance, and even present a danger to drivers,” said Sie Maroon, Public Works Deputy Director – Operations. “One of the duties we’re tasked with at Public Works is to keep our public properties and rights-of-way clear and litter free. That’s what we’re aiming to do this week.”

The Peoria Public Works Department is enforcing the Code, (Ch. 13, Art. III, Sect. 13-53) that states such items cannot be placed in public places:

“No person shall display in any way any handbill, advertisement or sign of any kind on any public place or upon any tree, pole, post, hydrant, public litter receptacle, bridge, pier or upon any public structure except as such may be permitted by this Code.”

“We hope by removing their signs, those who have been posting them begin to understand that they’re violating a City ordinance and should only place their signs on private property,” said Maroon.
