M*A*S*H Star, Peoria Native David Ogden Stiers Dies

Stiers, 75, succumbed to bladder cancer at his home in Newport, Oregon.

PEORIA, IL — David Ogden Stiers, who portrayed witty, snobbish Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in the iconic television show M*A*S*H, died Saturday. Stiers, 75, succumbed to bladder cancer at his home in Newport, Oregon, according to media sources. Stiers was born in Peoria and attended Urbana High School before moving to Oregon.

He received two Emmy nominations for his role as the erudite Major Winchester in the ultra-popular Korean War drama/sitcom M*A*S*H.

Stiers is also known for his role in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," doing double duty as the beloved clock, Cogsworth, and the narrator in the 1991 animated film. He did several other Disney films, serving as a voice actor on movies such as "Pocahontas" "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Lilo & Stitch."
