Peoria County Jail Announces Deceased Inmate
The male was found in his cell in the early morning on Feb. 14.
On Sunday, February 14, 2021, just after 1:00 a.m., Corrections staff at the Peoria County Jail discovered a male inmate hanging in his cell, located in a general population housing area of the Jail. The male inmate was immediately cut down and lifesaving efforts began, but were unsuccessful.
The male inmate, 59-year-old Michael Dyer, was pronounced deceased at 1:15 a.m. Dyer, whose last known address was in Decatur, Illinois, was booked into the Peoria County Jail on January 26, 2021.

Physical exam and autopsy demonstrated that Dyer died from asphyxiation due to self-hanging. There were no other occupants in the cell at the time of the incident.
The Illinois State Police is handling the investigation.
