Standing Water In Central Illinois Fields Could Impact Crops

What a central Illinois farmer is saying about standing water from recent rain in farm fields.

CENTRAL ILLINOIS — This week's rain in central Illinois could impact local farming as farmers are hoping for smaller amounts of rain in the upcoming months. Central Illinois Proud reports Wednesday's flash flood alerts and flood warnings in areas across this part of the state followed heavy rainfall, leaving standing water in some farm fields. A local farmer tells the news source that even if there's three to four inches of standing water in a field for over a 24-hour period, it could create conditions that cause oxygen to leave the soil, which will hurt the growth of surrounding crops.

With rain and storms a given throughout the summer months, don't try to drive through the water if you come across flooded roadways — it could be deeper than it appears. "Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the NWS said. "Turn around, don't drown."
