CHICAGO, IL — Sunday's spring snowstorm could bring up to 4 inches of “very wet and slushy snow” to most of northern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service, and a winter weather advisory warns that accumulations of up to 6 inches are possible for some areas. The unseasonable storm was expected to continue through mid-afternoon Sunday. A winter weather advisory is in place until 3 p.m. for Kane, DeKalb, McHenry, Boone, Lee, Ogle, Winnebago and LaSalle counties, and snowfall rates could exceed two inches per hour in those areas.

"While snow will melt when it hits the ground in many areas, a few locations will likely see snow fall heavily enough that it could accumulate 2-4 inches, mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces," according to the NWS, which said there was also a "slight chance" of thundersnow Sunday morning.

Snow could be heavy at time, affecting visibility.

Strong winds could also result in large waves on Lake Michigan and minor lakeshore flooding.

Monday's forecast calls for mostly sunny weather and a high in the low 50s for much of the area, but thunderstorms could return to the area Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the NWS.

The last time the Chicago area got more than three inches of snow on April 14 was in 1967, when 3.1 inches fell. In 1961, snowfall totals hit 5.4 inches, the NWS said.

The unseasonable weather prompted Sunday's Cubs vs. Angels game to be postponed. A makeup date has not yet been announced.
