Dangerous Heat, Oppressive Humidity For IL Father's Day Weekend

A potentially dangerous heat wave is hitting this weekend — here's what to expect.

It's gonna be a hot one. Father's Day weekend is heating up in Chicagoland, and an excessive heat watch is in effect for Cook County, while the rest of the area is under a heat advisory until 7 p.m. Monday.

Highs are expected to reach the low to mid-90s on Friday, with heat indexes near 100 — possibly reaching 110 degrees.

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible," the National Weather Service said. "Drink plenty of water, wear light weight and loose
fitting clothing, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun and take frequent breaks, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke."

In Cook County, NWS said, "The extended duration of heat, combined with nearly full sunshine, and oppressive warmth even at night will lead to potentially hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions."
