Flood Warning For Illinois, Plus Heavy Storms

Heavy rain in the forecast means likely flooding, and storms could produce 50 mph wind gusts.

A flood warning is in effect for counties including northwestern Will, Kendall, Grundy, Kane, Lake, northwestern Cook, DuPage and McHenry until 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, with heavy rain in the forecast. The National Weather Service said areas expected to experience flooding include Channahon, Minooka, Joliet, Plainfield, Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Naperville, Elgin, Arlington Heights,Downers Grove, Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Carol Stream, and Carpentersville.

If you encounter flooded roadways, don't try to drive through the water — it could be deeper than it appears. "Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the NWS said. "Turn around, don't drown."

According to the NWS, as of late Wednesday afternoon, the Fox River in Montgomery was at 12.16 feet, not far below the flood stage 13. In Plainfield, the DuPage River was at 7.15 feet, compared to the 12-foot flood stage. In Bolingbrook, the east branch of the DuPage was at 15.23 feet, compared with flood stage of 19.5 feet.

With the remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto creating rain across northwestern Indiana, strong storms and heavy rain continue to develop across Illinois.

Some storms may produce wind gusts of up to 50 mph, the NWS said. Periods of heavy rain are expected to last through early evening.
