Here Are The Best Walking Trails In Plainfield

Getting more exercise is a popular New Year's resolution. Here are some of the best places to do it.

PLAINFIELD, IL — While the Department of Health and Human Services recommends about 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity — like walking — every week, most American adults don't come anywhere near that mark. Adding more exercise to your daily routine remains a popular New Year's resolution, and luckily Plainfield has dozens of public parks that are great for getting in a morning or evening walk.

Here are some of the best places to stretch your legs in Plainfield.

  • Clow Stephens: Located on Lily Chache Road, between Caton Farm and Route 30, this 10.5 acre park includes soccer fields, dog park, playground, restrooms, and a nature trail.
  • Creekside North: This half-mile asphalt trail connects to the larger Mather Woods trail system.
  • Eaton Preserve: The 76.6-acre site of a historic farm, Eaton Preserve features river access and a canoe launch, playground, picnic area, volleyball courts, fishing, ice skating during the winter and a .9-mile trail that will be part of a proposed 29-mile regional DuPage River Trail.
  • Fort Begs Bike Trail (North): This 1.4-mile trail starts at the Streams Recreation Facility and connects to both Electric Park and Village Green Park.
  • Fort Begs Bike Trail (South): Starting at Theodore Street and running north, this trail ends at the DuPage River. It is not connected to its northern counterpart.
  • Great Divide Bike Trail: Starts at Old Renwick Road and runs south, connecting to Old Renwick Trail Park and ending at the pond along Indian Head Lane.
  • Greg B. Bott Park: Located just southwest of Plainfield Central High School, this park features a playground, portable restrooms, basketball court, skate park, concessions and a .4 mile paved trail that connects to the northern Fort Begs Bike Trail.
  • King's Crossing: This park and playground in the King's Crossing subdivision, is park of the 1.3-mile Normantown Trail.
  • Legends Soccer Fields: These 10 acres of soccer fields next to Plainfield South High School also feature trails and are a great place to walk.
  • Mather Woods: This nature preserve features a 1.5-mile trail system (including a half-mile paved trail) that connects to Creekside North Park.
  • Nature's Crossing: This 1.5-mile paved trail is part of the Norman Greenway, which also features a basketball court, playground, sledding (snow not provided) and access to the nearby Daisy Dog Park.
  • Normantown Trail: This bike trail is accessible from W. 127th Street and runs parallel to Route 30. Officials hope to extend the trail all the way to the Normantown Equestrian center in the near future. It currently ends at 125th Street.
  • North Point: This 2.9-acre neighborhood park features a playground, basketball court and walking trails.
  • Oaks at Van Horn: This 36-acre park features a .4-mile paved trail as well as access to the Van Horn Woods and Plainfield Bike Park.
  • Olde Renwick Trail: This 28.5-acre neighborhood park features a playground, fishing pier, basketball court and is part of the 1-mile Great Divide Trail.
  • Parkview Meadows: This 10.5-acre neighborhood park features a playground paved walking patch that runs southeast across Fairfield Drive.
  • Patriot Square: This 5.1 acre park includes a walking trail for you and a playground for the kids.
  • Recreation Administration Center: The Park District Headquarters is located next to Boy Scout Park and features a playground, concessions, ice skating, and walking trails. Recreational programming and classes also take place at the facility.
  • River Point Estates: A path starts at the intersection of S. River and W. Fraser Roads and runs along a pond parallel to the DuPage River.
  • Riverside Parkway: This 42-acre park features a 1.75-mile paved trail and is part of the proposed 29-mile DuPage River Trail. Other features include a natural resources area, shelter and canoe launch.
  • Riverview: This is the trailhead of a proposed 29-mile DuPage River Trail that will run from Naperville to Channahon when complete. Currently, about .75 miles of the trail is complete. The area also features an unimproved canoe launch and gazebo shelter.
  • Riverwalk: Also part of the future DuPage River Trail, this 18.9-acre neighborhood park features a playground and walking trails.
  • Streams Park: Located next to the Streams Recreation Center, this 7.2-acre park features an open grass field and playground and is part of the 1.4-mile Fort Beggs Trail (North).
  • Streams Recreation Center: Park of the North Beggs Trail (North), this facility hosts recreational classes and features a playground, shelter and portable restrooms.
  • Sunset Parkway: This 16.4-acre park is part of the future DuPage River Trail and features a playground, river access and walking trails.
  • Vintage Harvest: This 2.2-acre park features a basketball park and playground and is part of the 1.4-mile Fort Beggs Trail (North).
