ILLINOIS — 'Tis the season to get spooked and scared — and there's no shortage of haunted attractions in Chicagoland. Here's a look at some of the spookiest sites to scare up a terrifying good time for Halloween 2019.

"Chicago’s most horrifying haunted experience" may be too intense for young children and is not recommended for kids under 12. Attractions include "The Other Side" and "Creature Feature," including classic monsters of the silver screen. Price: Depending on date and time, ticket prices vary from $19.99-$29.99 general admission, $10 extra for "fast pass" access with 1/3 the wait time, $20 extra for "skip the line" tickets. Hidden deep in the woods, HellsGate Haunted House — named the scariest haunted house in Illinois by HauntWorld — is a multi-level mansion filled with secret passages, giant slides, ghastly secrets, undead abominations, really nervous groundskeepers and a darkness that the gate can no longer contain. It's an interactive adventure, and if you find the key, your admission is free. Featuring the Dragon Cave for 2019. Price: $30 general admission, $45 VIP (little to no wait), $65 instant entry, $99 Hell Pass (makes you and your friend the haunt's personal target for the entire tour, plus a T-shirt and photo op), $150 All-Access Pass, $300 for 12-person groups and $420 for 12-person VIP groups.

Basement of the Dead Haunted House

Rated "very scary," dubbed the No. 1 haunted house in the world by Buzzfeed and appropriate for ages 13 and up, this is where you'll meet Shattered the homicidal clown and the terrifying denizens of the Basement of the Dead. In addition to the haunted prison, this attraction includes the City of the Dead. One-stop shopping for all your Halloween scares, Midnight Terror Haunted House gets reinvented every Halloween season by its terror crew, moving walls, completely reconfiguring spaces and adding new layers of realism to their macabre maze of 60-plus rooms spread out over some 26,000 square feet. General admission is $24.99; VIP tickets (skip the admission line and get in faster) are $34.99. Discounted tickets ($2 off) can be purchased online. Students with ID receive $5 off tickets on Thursdays and Sundays during Midnight Terror's run through Nov. 2.

Realm of Terror Haunted House

Open in all weather conditions, Realm of Terror says it's the "craziest, most intense, extreme Halloween experience" and it's now in its 17th year. Realm of Terror features "the best in makeup effects created and supervised by FACEOFF Season 9 star, Stevie Calabrese." Prices: $25 general admission, $35 "skip the line" tickets and $45 VIP tickets include front of line access and a drink ticket for the Haunt Bar.

Evil Intentions

Located at the abandoned Elgin Casket Company, "this once proud building has been witness to murder, grisly discoveries, cult activities, and unexplained occurrences, and a dark legacy has emerged from its sordid history;" Evil Intentions promises "a new evil unleashed." Prices: Tickets start at $30; $40 VIP fast pass. Also offering ghost tours ($50 per person for a 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. tour of the building): "Join us as we spend an evening investigating the old factory and attempt to make contact with the spirits that reside within."

Dungeon Of Doom

The "legendary" haunt is celebrating 20 years of fear and rated "very scary." Dungeon of Doom bills itself as "the place where nightmares loom," and "many brave souls have entered looking for scares, only to exit a shell of the person they once were," warning: "If you’re looking for 'scares,' look elsewhere… but if you’re looking for an experience that will leave a dark stain upon your soul, then step forward to see the delightful nightmares that await you. Three pricing tiers: Killer days - $30 general admission, $50 VIP, add escape room for $17; Prime Days - $35 general admission, $55 VIP, add $17 for escape room; Blackout Days (lights out) - $30 general admission, $40 VIP.

Heap's Haunted Corn Maze

Nightmare at the Terrace Haunted House

The nightmare begins the moment you step into the Terrace Centre and stops after you weave your way through what seem to be endless rooms of terror, or does it?," the park district event promises. Recommended for ages 8+. Price: $10 general admission. Price is half off for teens on opening night, Oct. 11.

This interactive Halloween experience promises to be "all fun, no fear" and is Chicago's only family friendly Halloween-themed pop-up. This all-new encounter is an all on celebration of the season with countless photo-opportunities that plunge visitors straight into the action. Brave the cursed halls of an abandoned hospital and protect the world from an onslaught of creepy zombies. Laugh your way into the big top, and pose with the not-so-friendly clowns of the Carnival of Carnage. Grab a photo inside the swirling, twirling vortex into another dimension or simply enjoy the spooky scenery and ambiance of an old graveyard in front of a haunted mansion. Price: $9.99 to $25.99, with discounts for children.
