Man, 64, Dies In I-55 Crash Monday

PLAINFIELD, IL — A man died in a crash on I-55 in Plainfield on Monday, Plainfield Fire Protection District Chief Jon Stratton said.
Around 1 p.m., the fire district along with the Illinois State Police troopers responded to the southbound lanes of I-55 at milepost 255 after receiving a report of a vehicle that went off the roadway, he said.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, Benito Macias, 64, of Kewanee, was pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. by the Will County Coroner's Office. Stratton said the police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but it seemed as if "something flew through the windshield and struck the driver."

An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday, the coroner said.
All southbound lanes on I-55 were closed and reopened around 5:11 p.m.
