PLAINFIELD, IL — For the 15 or so months as the COVID-19 pandemic festered in the Chicagoland area and beyond, Mina Griffith was tasked with planning and implementing all health-releated aspects affecting about 25,000 students and 3,200 employees as the assistant superintendent of student services for Plainfield School District 202.

For her work, Griffith was awarded the 2021 Walter G. and Juanita F. Niehus Award Monday. The award, a namesake honoring the district's former Superintendent of Schools Walter Niehus and his wife, former teacher Juanita, was established in 1986 to award those who exemplify service, dedication and excellence, which were characteristics the couple were known for.

"The pandemic brought so many unique challenges to our students, families and the district," Griffith said at the Board of Education meeting Monday night, where she was presented the award. "All of us were learning and problem solving together."

Every year, district employees and community members nominate candidates who show "extraordinary committment" to students in the Plainfield school district, according to the district's website. This year, Griffith showed those traits.

Before working her way up to assistant superintendent, Griffith — a 23-year veteran educator — worked as an early childhood special education teacher at Bonnie McBeth Learning Center. She started her District 202 career in 2000, according to a news release.

Griffith also worked as a special education administrator at Indian Trail Middle School and Walker's Grove Elementary School from 2006-2008 before becoming principal at Bonnie McBeth in 2008.

Along with thanking the District 202 Foundation For Excellence and the Niehus family at the Board of Education meeting Monday, Griffith also commemorated the district's staff for their "extraordinary service and commitment" in keeping people safe while continuing to teach students.

"I believe all of our students, staff, and families deserve an award and recognition for their perseverance during the pandemic and for helping District 202 provide a safe learning environment for everyone," Griffith said.
