Plainfield Among Best Small Cities With Lowest Poverty

A new study ranks smaller cities based on affordability and quality of life.

PLAINFIELD, IL — The Village of Plainfield is among the best small cities in the country, according to WalletHub. The personal finance website recently released the results of a study comparing smaller towns based upon "33 key indicators of livability," including housing costs to school-system quality to restaurants.

The findings ranked 1,268 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety, with Plainfield ranking in the 96th percentile. The village ranked 12th in terms of affordability, 180th for education and health and 48th for safety compared with the other cities on the list.

Two Illinois cities, Highland Park and Algonquin, ranked slightly higher than Plainfield in the 97th percentile. Highland Park, however, ranked 85th for affordability and 53rd for safety, while Algonquin was 18th for affordability and 81st for safety.

The 99th percentile represents the top 1 percent of small cities in America, according to WalletHub. The top-ranked city with the highest total score was Princeton, New Jersey, while Bessemer, Alabama, which calls itself "The Marvel City," ranked last. Read the full rankings here.
