Plainfield High School Artists Win National Awards

PLAINFIELD, IL —District 202 officials say 20 student artists from Plainfield Central, South and East high schools took home 36 regional awards in Scholastic's 2019 Art and Writing Awards.

The national contest, sponsored by the Scholastic book company, is open to 7th to 12th grade students who submit art or writing for the chance to win scholarships and have their work published or exhibited by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Entries are judged by well-known artists and writers, and more than 9 million student writers have been recognized since 1923.

Past winners include well-known names like Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avendon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King and John Updike.

Officials say that "Gold Key" awards will be considered for national recognition. National medals will be awarded later in the spring, while top entries at the national level will be displayed this spring and summer as part of the organization's national tour.
