'Spirit Squad' Shines At Plainfield South

The squad joins students with special needs and the Plainfield South varsity cheerleading squad.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield South High School art teacher and cheerleading coach Brooke Twohill created the Spirit Squad in 2016. This year’s squad has 12 girls and 1 boy.

The members are students with special needs or are in the Secondary Community Occupational Real-Life Education program at Plainfield South or Plainfield East high schools.

Plainfield South varsity cheerleaders help the Spirit Squad learn routines and perform during home sporting events.

Twohill said both groups of students benefit greatly from the squad.

The varsity cheerleaders gain some insight into different learning styles and serve as positive role models for their peers.

The squad members become more confident and get a chance to express themselves on a stage they never thought possible.
