Athletico Physical Therapy expert shares head injury prevention tips

Concussion is a risk in virtually all sports, especially football. According to American Academy of Neurology, an athlete decreases their chance of concussion by 20% and risk of skull fracture by 70% when wearing a football helmet. A properly fitted helmet minimizes the head’s movement during impact that causes concussions. Athletico physical therapists and athletic trainers who specialize in youth sports understand the importance of a properly fit helmet for preventing concussions and head injury. As youth athletes take the field this season, Athletico experts have outlined a few tips and exercises to best protect athletes including:

  • Practice neck-strengthening exercises: Neck-training exercises provide support to the spine and shoulder blades and helps youth athletes absorb the impact of forces that occur during sports. Players should practice shrug and pull movements, as well as extension and lateral flexion exercises to strengthen the neck muscles. Focusing on these exercises during open gym in the off season is a great way to proactively prevent concussions and head injury during the season.
  • Complete a helmet-fit checklist: All parents, coaches and youth athletes should always ensure a helmet fits properly before use in a game or practice. Top five indicators of a bad fit include:
    • Ear holes don’t line up with ears
    • Brow of helmet is either on top of or far above the eyebrows
    • Face is visible below the face mask
    • Straps on chinstrap are visibly lax
    • There is space between the cheek pads and the cheek
  • Ensure proper chinstrap placement: The chinstrap is a vital part of the helmet that stabilizes the head. The chinstraps should all pass under the facemask bars of a football helmet. This ensures the helmet retains its correct orientation. It’s important to remember the chinstrap is not a tightening device and that the helmet should feel snug without the chinstrap fastened.
