K-9 Killed In The Line Of Duty: IL Sheriff's Department

BOONE COUNTY, IL — An Illinois sheriff's department was mourning the loss of one of their own Sunday morning after a police dog was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on I-90. Police said K-9 Loki died after a suspected drunken driver smashed into the back of a deputy's squad vehicle.

Boone County Deputy Robert Rosenkranz was conducting a traffic stop on I-90 near Irene Road when the squad vehicle was hit. Rosenkranz was not in the vehicle and suffered only minor injuries from flying debris.

But Loki was inside the squad car when it was hit. He was taken to Emergency Vet Clinic in Rockford, where he died, police said.

Illinois State police are investigating the crash.

"The members of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office offer our deepest condolences to the Rosenkranz family. We ask that you keep the Rosenkranz family and our law enforcement family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the sheriff's office said, adding, "Rest in peace hero K9 Loki."
