Suspect Fatally Shoots Self During Traffic Stop: Rockford Police

Rockford police reported officer conducted traffic stop before suspect took out handgun, fatally shot self.

ROCKFORD, IL — The Rockford Police Department said an investigation is underway after a traffic stop involving one of their officers turned fatal for a suspect at the scene. Police said the officer pulled over a vehicle pulling a trailer just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on what several reports said was Bypass 20, during which the driver of the vehicle pulled out a handgun. According to police, the officer fired several shots, but the suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said the officer was taken to the hospital per protocol.

The Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force is conducting an independent investigation into Wednesday morning's incident.
