Woman Rescued After Driving Into Rock River

Here's what a witness reportedly saw happen as he was driving down Madison Street.

ROCKFORD, IL — A Rockford woman and rescue workers left the scene injury-free after she drove her vehicle into the freezing Rock River, according to fire officials. Rockford Register Star said according to Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten, the incident happened near Prairie Street Brewing Co. around 11:45 p.m. when a man who was driving down Madison Street called 911 after he saw the 51-year-old woman drive past him and into the water.

According to Bergsten, firefighters arrived within four minutes of the call and threw a rope to the woman, who was sitting on the roof of the submerged vehicle, which appeared to be a Hummer.

She was the vehicle's only passenger and waited about a half-hour for divers to assemble and launch a rescue boat with a flotation device attached to pull her from the vehicle's roof, the news report said, according to officials.
