ROMEOVILLE, IL — Romeoville might soon be able to add "Municipality of the Year" to its list of achievements if it wins the category in Real Estate Journal Awards July 22.

The village was named a finalist for the awards not only in that category, but also for Most Significant Lease Transaction of the Year for its Wayfair project on Renwick Road, a $125 million building construction and tenant improvement investment, the village said in a release Thursday. The lease is for a property of more than 1.2 million square feet, which is the largest in Romeoville's history, according to the village.

"We are honored that our recent achievements are being considered for these awards," Mayor John Noak said in a statement. "No matter who wins, I am exceedingly proud of our staff and partners for all the development that is happening in our village."

By opening a new fulfillment center in Romeoville for the e-commerce hub, the company expects to bring between 450-900 jobs to the community and also generate millions of dollars in taxable sales, according to the village's release.

The Wayfair project also includes extending Pinnacle Drive to connect Renwick Road to Airport Road.

Wayfair also played into the village being named a finalist for the City/Municipality of the Year award. Other construction projects, including a new Crate & Barrel facility on Taylor Road, factored in as well. The village also made progress on a single-family residential development that's expected to expand residency by 1,000 people, according to the release, which helped it in the category.
